Conference – From the lab to the living room: the benefits of co-production in research into neurological conditions.
Members of the MESiG Committee attended this day on Thursday 14th April 2016 which was held at the All Nations Centre in Cardiff. MESiG had a table to display information about ME. It was a conference which explored the benefits of a co-production approach for researchers and participants in the context of the current research environment in Wales.

MESiG launched a petition with the aim of lobbying the Welsh Assembly to fund a specialist clinic and team for sufferers of M.E. in Wales.

A national demonstration was held to protest against ATOS. This is a French company employed by the government to carry out work capability assessments. There have been a catalogue of failures during the process and the general feeling is that the system is not fit for purpose. MESiG attended local protest at the government buildings, Heath.

Awareness raising day at Sainsbury‘s in Thornhill raised £124.

Fundraising event in Glenwood Church raising £1200 for Carol to get to Burrswood Hospital. A spectacular night of music and dance – A Zumba based evening which included dance performances and top class entertainment. Awareness was also raised for M.E, Human trafficking and modern day slavery, by Chris and Karen, between performances in the form of a speech.

Christalla Bailey and Denise Thomson attended the AGM of Vale Centre for Voluntary Services (VCVS).
The meeting was held in the Memorial Hall, Barry. MESiG were presented with a cheque for £700, for the funding of an office. This was funded by Kickstart, which is an Assembly grant scheme that helps the voluntary sector.

MESiG attend the ‘Hardest Hit’ Campaign. Disabled people, their families and friends took to the streets in cities across the UK protesting against Government cuts to disability benefits and services. Protests took place in cities including Edinburgh, Cardiff, Leeds, Nottingham, Brighton, Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol. ALMOST 1,000 campaigners descended on Cardiff city centre to oppose cuts to the Disability Living Allowance. For 45 minutes, the Welsh capital came to a standstill as the crowds marched through the streets as part of the Hardest Hit campaign.

Members of MESIG committee were unable to attend Action For M.E. AGM and Conference in London this year despite booking 2 places but a member very kindly wrote a report for us as they had attended. The Team here at MESIG would like to congratulate and say a massive thank you to 3 amazing individuals from HSJ accountants for successfully completing the Cardiff 10k Run on Sunday September 11. It was a fantastic event and they managed to raise an impressive amount of funds for the organisation. HSJ Accountants love to support events outside of business such as local charities whenever they can and this year MESIG was fortunate enough to be supported by them. After training for several months, Kim Jackson, Nick Sakkas and Rachael Yelland took part in the Cardiff 10km Race which started and finished on Cardiff‟s iconic King Edward VII Avenue at the heart of the City Hall. After a very successful race, they managed to raise the targeted £1000!

MESiG applied for a grant through the Voluntary Action Cardiff (VAC) Impact Plus Grant Scheme, in order to upgrade our IT systems. We were successful in our application and we were awarded £1389.23.

Gemma and Chris attended a Cardiff Health and Social Care Network (CHSCN) and Health Alliance event. This was part of ‘What Matters’-Cardiff’s Integrated Partnership Strategy Consultation on Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Operation Plan 2011-2014.
We have changed from our Thornhill venue to Ararat Centre for the Community. We still meet the first Monday of the month at 2.30-4pm.

Meetings- Keppoch Street meetings are held every 2nd Tuesday of the month at Mackintosh Institute, Keppoch Street, off City Rd, Cardiff, CF24 3JW (except February, August and December) 7.30-9pm. Thornhill meetings are held every first Monday of the month (unless this falls on a bank holiday and then it will be the following week) at the Thornhill community centre (by Sainsbury’s), off Excalibur Dr, Thornhill, Cardiff, CF14 9GA, 2.30-4pm. ZUMBA XMAS PARTY FUNDRAISING EVENT Park Conservative Club, 217 City Rd, CF243JD, 7.30-11.30pm. Tickets £10 (Nibbles, performances, fun follow along line ups, xmas crackers, raffle). Irene Davies (Chris‘s daughter), has decided to hold a fundraising night for M.E. Zumba is a new dance exercise craze which is sweeping the nation, it involves moving to Latin music in a variety of styles. No partner or experience is needed to participate, just the desire to have fun. Irene qualified in October after obtaining her degree in dance and has started 2 classes to date in Cardiff.

MESiG obtained funding from the Big Lottery to run a course teaching useful techniques to help people cope with symptoms of M.E. Marilyn Godfrey facilitated the course.

MESiG attend Action for M.E.‘s conference-‘ Work, welfare benefits and M.E. – is anyone listening?’ at the offices of Allen & Overy, London. The Chief Executive of Action for M.E. Peter Spencer introduced himself to Chris and expressed his thanks that representatives from MESiG were in attendance. Peter presented as a person who is passionate about his work and genuinely wanted to make a difference.
